Statement about anti-inflammatory drugs ibuprofen and diclofenac.

June 10th

The anti-inflammatory painkillers ibuprofen and diclofenac have been in the news today. Research published this week has suggested these drugs may increase the risk of people having a heart attack while taking them.

Doctors don't yet know for sure if there really is a problem. The research is at an early stage and suggests the risk is small. It may only affect something like 1 in 500 people who take these drugs.

For now doctors at Western Road would recommend you continue to take ibuprofen and diclofenac if you find them helpful. When your prescription needs renewing please feel free to make an appointment with a doctor to discuss your treatment.

Ibuprofen is marketed as Nurofen/Advil/Cuprofen and is an ingredient in other preparations available over the counter
Diclofenac tablets are only on prescription. Trade names include Voltarol/Arthrotec/Diclomax
