Diabetic diet
We have a dietician who comes to the surgery. She will be happy to give you detailed advice about this.
You can help to achieve three things by changing the way you eat.
1.You can lower your blood sugar
Concentrate on eating 'healthy foods' such as fruit and veg', meat, fish, bread, rice and potatoes. Avoid sweet sugary foods such as granulated sugar, sweets, chocolates, desserts. Replace soft drinks with diet or low sugar drinks.
2.You can reduce the fat or cholesterol in your blood
Cut the fat off meat. Grill rather than roast or fry. Go easy with butter type spreads and consider replacing them with Benechol. Use a reduced fat milk. Try to ensure that foods you buy are marked 'less than 3%' fat.
3. You can lose weight
By eating smaller quantities of healthier food you should be able to lose weight. Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Losing weight can by itself help improve blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure.
